Food for thought. I have this feeling that the internet has destroyed my memory but reinforced my imagination. Do I need my memory? I seem to be able to function with out it. Wouldn’t it be cool if we all wore name tags? Hi, my name is Steve. Actually I’m pretty sure it isn’t, but I can’t remember what mine is right now. Oh well.
Julia at Formbar Creative Clay creates amazing works of art in the form of handmade ceramics and she asked us to design a little info card which explains how to use her kitchen graters. We came up with a design which worked well for the grater bowl and grater plate, but could also be extrapolated in the future for the other beautiful items Julia makes and sells at her shop. Because we gave the idea room to grow, the grater cards were soon joined by a card about Julia which has the same simple aesthetic and looks like it belongs to the original set. We also designed specialty stickers that adhere to Julia’s ceramic creations.
There are few things more enjoyable than sitting outside on a balmy Melbourne evening eating yourself stupid on Spanish-style tapas and desserts. Hosting a successful dinner is not unlike pulling off a successful design project. You draw on inspiration from different sources and try your best to produce something appealing and interesting in the time you have available. The end result relies as much on the quality of what you have to work with as it does on your skills, but if you’re working with great ingredients and adventurous palates, it’s hard to go wrong.
This is where i say something cool but the images speak for themselves. I think I nailed the wallpaper in the end.

This pink design is with compliments from our wet table (the table we use to do paint and ink based designs). Featuring in this design is a toy I got in Spain. Hope you like it. I have been loving the iPhone wallpapers.

Day 2 of my free wallpaper. I chose to celebrate the fact that I always choose rock in the rock paper scissors game. Rock beats all, especially when you tell people that you intend to go rock. 9 times out of 10 they will choose scissors. What is with people?

If you notice the grain in this shot it is because it is old-school film. It is a shot looking down the tunnel at one of Melbourne’s underground train stations. If you can guess which station it is, send me an email (this week) and I’ll give you a special reward. The reward has little or no value but is totally cool (phew covered myself on this one).

I’ve been watching a bit of Get Smart lately. Someone needs to create an iPhone app along the lines of iDaft called iGetSmart where you hit a key and hear all those classic catchphrases – missed it by that much, sorry Chief, good thinking 99… If the app already exists, send me a link. If it doesn’t, then you should totally design it and send me royalties.
Today was flat out, hence the late post. I wish I could post a link to the website we sent live today because the design is awesome (even if I do say so myself) but the marketing agency who managed the job would be cross if their client found out we were the evil geniuses (geniusii?) responsible for making the magic happen.
As a tribute to the fact that this post comes to you courtesy of my iPhone, I’m planning to design a free wallpaper for you to download tomorrow for your phone or computer.
And loving it
Caffeine is a designer’s friend. Obviously the day began with a coffee before leaving the house (how else can you be expected to get going?) but this is the first work caffeine for today: Lipton’s black tea with milk from a thermos. I’m pretty sure the caffeine content is negligible, but when teamed with my interpretation of honey madeleines, it makes for a soothing mid-morning pick-me-up and a chance for us to sit around and work out how to tackle everything we need to do this week. And a chance to talk about jeans.
Hey, I took this photo at a market. They are sometimes the best place to go and find inspiration.
My favorite Melbourne markets are:
The Rose Street Artists’ Market – Fitzroy
Queen Victoria Market – Melbourne
Prahran Market – South Yarra
Abbotsford Convent – Abbotsford
and a new one…
Preston Market – Preston
