High on NYC: day 2

Concept stores. Some rock, others fall flat. Tokidoki was a little disappointing. Their capsule store was really cramped and not at all conducive to browsing. Kid Robot is coooool. Lots of little collectibles and a bunch of mega giant fibreglass characters. We might go back to Kid Robot tomorrow night for the launch of the Dunny 2010 collection (we’re very busy people, it’s too early to commit). We were surprisingly restrained and left empty-handed today.

The weirdest purchase of the day was a box of bacon caramel toffee covered in 42% cacao milk chocolate… only in America? The thought of trying it fills me with a mix of excitement and dread. Review to follow in coming days so stay tuned.

We also walked along the High Line – a disused railway bridge that has been converted into a public park. They’ve done an amazing job of integrating the train tracks and urban aesthetic into the garden design and the breeze up there was a sweet relief given the heat we endured walking the streets of New York. Cool views of the Hudson River and across the city skylines.

NYC baby! Day 1

We arrived in the middle of the night so we found a cheap(ish) hotel with a 24 hour reception and slept till lunchtime. After a few false starts on the bus, we made it to our new pad in the Lower East Side. We stayed local and checked out some cool little shops and had our first real New York food experience – a cheeseburger and pastrami on rye. We also made it to Broadway (if you can make it there you’ll make it anywhere) where we induldged in some retail therapy. Did I mention we saw a massive Obey mural? This place is cool.

Work in progress

This has definitely been a fun week for our resident Photoshop masters. We can’t wait to reveal the amazing image the boys have created, but this glimpse will have to suffice for now. We’ve all gained honorary PhDs in polo and Persian warriors. Ask us anything about either topic and we’ll formulate a convincing response.

I was bad again

Time got away from me again, so this is a fill-in-the-gap post. Here’s a much more responsible blogger for you to follow instead: Unhappy Hipsters. Guaranteed to make you laugh out loud at work.

Winter weekend in Melbourne

It’s nice to chill out on the weekend and recharge the batteries, but not all weekends are so laid back. What did we get up to? Well, there was a quick trip to visit The Mud Factory in Healesville, art and chats at ArtBoy Gallery’s launch party, decadently delicious white chocolate cheesecake at The Cullen’s Terrace Bistro, pushy crowds at the Melbourne Design Market, fresh air at MARKit@Fed Square and the perfect avocado smash at Penny Farthing Espresso. I need another weekend just to recover.

Studio love and hipstamatic

Can you tell we’re in love with our new studio? Graphic design be damned, I just want to build more Ikea shit.

We’re not counting our chickens, but

All going well, we’re Northcote-bound. Leases are being drawn up for our beautiful new graphic design studio in High Street Northcote and we’re getting very excited about having a blank canvas to work with. Our new space is likely to include quite a few Ikea solutions, but there’s also a world of funky furnishings we want to explore. I think Design*Sponge has inspired me to document the before and after.

Art Melbourne is on this weekend

My favourite artist dirtfish isn’t at Art Melbourne this year, but heaps of other amazing artists are. I can’t wait to see Catherine Campbell’s new drawings – I bought one of her artworks at a recent exhibition in Northcote and I’m sure her new collection will be beautiful. I’m a big fan of Ralf Kempken’s work too, especially his screens, and it’s only a matter of time before I have one hanging on my wall. Another favourite is Peter McLisky – one of his bunny cutouts sits at my computer, but one day I hope to have one of his giant sculptures.

A stitch in time

wool + crochet hook + too much time spent watching tv = baby blanket

It’s too easy sometimes to just come home after work and mentally check out. I’m trying to make a conscious effort to do creative things in my spare time. My shoulders are a little bit cross with me for hunching over this blanket for a week and a half, but hopefully the end result will be a cozy and useful present for my first ever niece or nephew.

I don’t have a nick name grr

All I want in life is a cool name. Sometimes parents don’t realize the responsibility they take on when they name their child. It’s a label that they carry around for the rest of their life. Sure I could rebrand, but I’d still feel like me but a cheap imitation. Nope, once they write it in ink on the birth certificate you’re stuck with it. Name books are no help except for a comprehensive list of what not to name your child. So now my only hope is to get a cool nick name but no one will bite. I know – I have been trying since I was 12 and none have stuck. It’s hard to come up with one yourself and have others adopt it. If you leave it up to your friends to make one you end up with something based on an embarrassing incident. So what the hell can I do? As I see it, all I can do now is join the police force and work my way up to commissioner and everyone can call me ‘sarge’ in a funny ironic way.

Sarge out
